Zen Carving
$17.00
Carving in clay using a method called “Zentangling” is one of my favorite things to do for fun and relaxation. It’s a simple, virtually “bullet proof” technique for adding unique interest to clay surfaces. During class you will be encouraged to first practice carving various Zentangles on slabs of clay. When you feel comfortable, you will then apply your favorite designs to your premade thrown, extruded or hand built pieces. I suggest making a mug or a vase to start.
Supplies:
- A mat or canvas to work on
- 1 or 2 leather hard 10” by 10” slabs of any clay for practice (be sure it’s not too dry or carving will be difficult and scratch like)
- 1 or 2 leather hard pieces to carve such as a mug, vase, or bowl. The surfaces of your pieces should be smooth for easiest carving. Any clay will work but if you prefer finer designs B Mix works well)
- Carving tools; Bring any favorite tools you have. I typically use tools with an open loop or V at the end such as the ones sold at Clay Club or a Zuoyou 6 pc carving set (see picture) available Amazon or at Marjon Ceramics
- Small paint brush
- Clay sponge.
Note: There are lots of Zentangle, doodling books available and many videos on line on Pinterest, YouTube etc. I suggest you do a search and pick out some favorite designs and practice doing them with pen and paper before class. It’s a great way to get comfortable and more confident prior to actually carving.
