Underglaze Transfers: Nov. 2026

Students will explore the creation and application of underglaze transfers. You will be making transfers, layering these handmade transfers, coloring and layering commercial transfers and finally painting directly on your pottery with underglazes to finish your surface design. There will be a focus on looking at the shape of your pottery and creating surface design that works with the shapes/lines of your pieces.
Supplies Needed:
- Basic tools
- Small soft rib
- Sponge
- Underglazes
- Plastic plate palette
- Brushes of various sizes
- Water/cup
- Stencils that work with your design (instructor also bringing some you can use)
- Two-three leather hard or green ware test tiles
- Two-three smaller leather hard, green ware or bisque ware pieces of pottery and some simple design ideas.
Note: We will be taking a lunch break, so bring your lunch.
If you need to purchase underglazes, Mayco fundamentals are recommended – a class pack or just the colors you need for your ideas. Newsprint to use for making transfers and commercial transfers will be provided for your use.
Instructor
Patricia Larsen-Goodin is mixed media artist, whose disciplines include glass, multi-media collage, and ceramics, focusing on surface design. She has been doing surface design on glass for 35 years and has taken that experience into collage and ceramics. She is primarily self-taught but has taken classes over the years. She is heavily influenced by shape and the intersection of arcs and lines in both her 2D and 3D work. She teaches around the country and Canada.
