In this 2-part class, you will learn how to create-on-of-a-kind RAKU glazed pottery fired outside in the Alternative Firing Kiln. RAKU ceramics are removed from the kiln while still burning red hot, then deprived of oxygen which brings out absolutely gorgeous finishes.
During the first class, students will prepare their pots for firing, Students should bring 1 – 2 pots that have been bisque (low) fired to the first class and appropriately – sized shards to match your pieces. If you are re-firing a piece from a previous RAKU firing, that piece will be counted as one of your two (2) allowed pieces. The maximum size for each of your pieces is 8 inches in width, depth, and height. The Alternate Firing Committee recommends that WS-5 clay be used for your RAKU pots.
Students will practice handling their pot with RAKU tongs in preparation for handling pots when at high temperatures. Safety procedures will be presented.
During the second class, student will participate in the RAKU/Alternative Firing process. This includes setting up the outdoor kiln area, preparing reduction cans, placing and removing their pots from the kiln, managing the reduction can during the reduction process and cleanup.
