This class is intended for those who have recently graduated from the BHB class.

BHB instructor Debbe Manchester will assist in this class.

During this 3 week class students will expand on their basic hand-building skills to make a table top totem consisting of learning to build a box, a ball and a topper. Each week the student will make the piece demonstrated in class and then they need to make a second piece before the next class on their own time. At the end of the class, the student will have the components for a 5 piece table top totem. This class will be offered quarterly to those members who have joined in the last 12 months and have not previously taken this class.

Supplies needed:

  • Clay of your choice (preferably a clay with grog such as Speckled Buff or Redstone)
  • Basic clay tools
  • Mat to work on
  • Slip to match clay body (bring plenty as we will be using quite a bit)
  • 45 degree angle cutter (we sell these in the club, purchase BEFORE the class)
  • Horseshoe cutter (we sell these in the club, purchase BEFORE class)
  • Hole cutter (needs to be large enough to fit the rod you will use to build your totem once finished. Remember shrinkage will occur.)
  • Paddling tool
  • Wooden roller two ended (one large, one small) is best
  • Narrow modeling tool to work cube corners
  • Texture and/or sprig molds you may want to use to embellish your pieces
  • Corn starch or Pam as needed for texture
  • 5”- 6” square cookie cutter or template to cut your 6 sides. IF you are using a template, create it BEFORE you come to class
  • Styrofoam half ball 5″-6″ in diameter. These can be purchased at Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Walmart. IF you purchase a Styrofoam ball, have it cut in half BEFORE you come to class
  • Note: Come to class and set up your work station but, DO NOT ROLL OUT CLAY UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO.
